Hearst: My Beauty Chat

Hosted by the beauty editors from Good Housekeeping, Cosmo, Oprah and Elle at Hearst, My Beauty Chat is a podcast on Amazon Alexa. It has A-list beauty expert guests, all the insider tips, trends, and more. The podcast is sponsored by L'Oreal and it’s multimodal with voice and screen display.

PROBLEM

My Beauty Chat launched as podcast with AM and PM Briefs (recorded audio with special guests) and a daily beauty quick tip. Post launch we saw that the daily tips were being played more often than the AM / PM briefs.

IDEATION

Based on measured results, we decided to give more emphasis to the tips in the skill. There were a wide range of beauty tips, but we narrowed down to the common tip types offered on the editorial sites and for easier use of navigation for the user on Alexa. In the new format, tips can be played at random or played by one of the three categories (Hair, Skin, Makeup). The briefs would now be changed to one per day.

I had to rethink the new use cases for the skill and create a flow for each.

DESIGN

DYNAMIC VOICE DISPLAYS

I worked on designs and front end for the screens. These examples are on the Alexa Show, displayed while the audio is being played. There is also a hint text to try today’s brief.
